Places to see in Melbourne Central

What to wear in Melbourne
Royal Arcade
On the last week of August I went to Melbourne and had the most of my 3 days visiting the popular spots, indulging in the best cafes and getting lost in the little painted alley ways. Going to a new place and trying new food is made easy these days with the help of Google maps and Trip Advisor/Zomato reviews. While you can be self-reliant because of these technologies, nothing beats when you have a friend who is a local to the city to show you around. Just makes life so much easier and the time ultra maximised.

Royal Arcade Melbourne

So where did we go after landing and unpacking our things? Nowhere else but to the central business district and found ourselves surfing the malls. First stop was Royal Arcade which is the oldest retail arcade in Australia. Behind Royal Arcade is the Block Arcade where hidden cafes and vintage shops can be found. Melbourne visit is not complete without trying out their cafés and indulging in their food.

Melbourne's architecture is characterised by an extensive juxtaposition of old and new. It is known for preserving a significant amount of Victorian architecture, just take a look at their huge churches and most government offices.

How cute is this carriage in front of St. Paul's Cathedral.
Flinders Street Railway Station
Ahh! the magnificent Flinders Street railway station.

On the same street where St. Paul's Cathedral but on a different block is Federation Square where it displays a modern type of architecture. Fed Square is a lively place to hang out, meet and watch people or events, explore the arts and enjoy the city celebrations. It is a wide-open area surrounded by irregular cubist shaped blocks and is the home of Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

Aside from the cafes, one thing that I look forward in visiting Melbourne is their shopping centres. Trust me, they have the best looking H&M building. I had to go inside to snap photos even if I didn't buy anything :) Zara shop is not so much far behind either.

One thing for sure, I had a great time in Melbourne by just roaming around their busy streets especially at night. The most memorable moment for me was going out with my friends looking for the best place to have dinner. Even though we were not that hungry we had to check out the café scene at night and we're always not disappointed.

And btw, the tram around the central district is free and that alone would encourage everyone to go out, eat and shop. They even had these 3 bronze sculptures carrying lunch boxes which were intended to be anonymous and to represent being trapped in the perpetual motion of consumerism. Wearing my bronze blazer maybe I could pass for one :)

This is only my first post about my trip to Melbourne, please come back for more re their famous graffiti alley Hosier Lane, Fitzroy, St. Kilda, Brighton Beach and the hotel's rooftop with different set of outfits each time.

  30. The place just looks amazing.. I love it when places and buildings preserved their Victorian architecture. They tell more stories than looking at modern buildings. From the pictures, I could tell that Melbourne has such a rich history and a great story to tell. And yes, I agree with you that nothing beats a friend as a tour guide. ^.^
